Being a seaman/seafarer is a very exciting job because it can entirely change your lifestyle, you will become an ambassador of our country at the same time you will work overseas together with different nationalities. You can travel all over the world for the rest of your contract and can earn ranging from 1,200$ US - 15,000$ US let's call it the perk of being a seaman. Seaman's job is one of the highest paying jobs in our country. But first, do you know which program you will take in order for you to become a seaman/seafarer?

This article will give a small idea of those young men/women who want to become mariners/seaman/seawoman someday. I hope you will learn something :)

Onboard the ship we have two departments called DECK DEPARTMENT and ENGINE DEPARTMENT. Each department has their own head, for Deck Department they call him/her Captain and for Engine Department they call him/her Chief Engineer but the Captain is the overall in charge of the vessel. The Department head are the one who responsible for their subordinates, respectively in which department they belong.

In order for you to become part in one of this department, you need to undergo a program called BS-Marine Transportation for Deck Department except catering and for Engine Department, BS-Marine Engineering except electrical.

=========================================================================
The Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation is a higher education degree program that compromises with the study of navigation, cargo handling, stowage, controlling safe operation of the ship and cares for persons on board the ship. Throughout the curriculum, students learn about different aspects of ship handling and seamanship. Life on board ship is somewhat different than life ashore, programs desire students to have sea-going internships and gets hands on training in a form of simulations prior to graduation.

Training in this field associates with low technical skills like knot tying with high technical applications like electronic chart display systems. Additional to requiring that students obtain leadership skills and learn how to swim, programs offer training in the following courses:

* Ship Structure
* Cargo Operations
* Marine Communications
* Nautical Science
* Safety at sea and ocean survival
* Admiralty law
* Navigational Watch Keeping
* COLREGS
* Stability
* Seamanship & etc

=========================================================================
The Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering is a higher education degree program that deals with the study of the marine propulsion system, its operation and maintenance as well as controlling the operation of the ship and cares for the person on board. Marine engineering applies basic engineering principles to systems designed to operate in predominately aquatic environments. This includes not only all types of seafaring vessels, docks, harbors, freight-handling facilities, oil platforms, but also engines, motors, navigational and communications devices, rigging, tools, and safety equipment.

Marine engineering employs techniques from many engineering disciplines. A 4-year program may be sufficient to familiarize the student with the span of subject areas suitable for marine engineers, but is unlikely to offer much depth in any single discipline. Basic courses include the following:

* Naval Architecture
* Ship Dynamics
* Marine Structures
* Fluid Mechanics
* Engineering analysis principles
* Engine Watch Keeping
* Power Plant
* Auxiliary Machinery
* Electrotechnology
* Thermodynamics & etc

There are a lot of public and private schools around Metro Manila that offers this kind of program. I hope you learn something :) just keep in touch with for more interesting topics about seaman's life.

Some say he’s half man half fish, others say he’s more of a seventy/thirty split. Either way he’s a fishy bastard.
